Four Years In The Making.

I’ve waited four years for the return of the Olympics, and I’m beyond excited that it is finally here!  Watching the Olympics is something that I’ve enjoyed doing with both family and friends since I was a little girl, and this year will be no different.  Who wouldn’t love three long weeks of great shows of athleticism mixed with huge amounts of patriotism? That’s right – NO ONE.

As I’m sure you all know by now, this year’s Olympic games will take place in London.  Did you know that this is actually the third time the summer games have been played there?  Props to anyone that can name the other two years…

This year’s games will actually feature several new things.  First off, this is the first year that the Olympics will incorporate social media.  For all of us social media fools, this is a blessing, but it might be more of a curse to Olympians who learned the power of social media the hard way (I’m looking at you, Voula Papchristou).  The London games will also be the first of the Olympics to use mobile payments. A group of over 10,500 athletes will be given a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone to use for payments in the Olympic Village. It will be incredibly interesting to see how consumers react to such a large scale mobile payment effort.

But more than these new efforts, I’m excited to see some familiar faces among those competing in London.  Here are the things I’m most excited about:

  • Watching swimmers (and apparently roomies) Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte try to beat their medal numbers from last year.
  • Seeing Misty-May Treanor and Kerri Walsh reunite in London to attempt their third straight medal in beach volleyball.
  • Cheering on my beloved Longhorns as they sprint their way to an Olympic victory.
  • And then, there’s all the gymnastics, diving, and soccer a girl can ask for!

With all this cheering to do, it sounds like it’s going to be a busy three weeks for me, but I can’t be more excited! What about you? What is your favorite part of the Olympic games, and what sports are you most excited to watch?
